This seven-day itinerary is designed for travellers who want more than a collection of monuments. It is a cultural passage through the ideas, craftsmanship, hospitality, spirituality, and resilience that continue to shape Ethiopia. The journey balances guided discovery with moments for coffee, markets, walking, scenic observation, and meaningful local connection.

Accommodation

AYA Addis Hotel offers a convenient 4-star base close to Bole International Airport, with an on-site restaurant, bar/lounge, and rooftop gym. Avanti Blue Nile Resort provides a comfortable lakeside base in Bahir Dar, while Goha Hotel offers hillside views over Gondar. In Lalibela, Tukul Village Hotel provides a traditional setting with 24 en-suite rooms arranged in tukul-style buildings, private balconies, Ethiopian-inspired design, a restaurant, coffee service, and lounge. Final properties are subject to confirmation and availability.

Baggage, Timing & Travel Notes

The historic north is best enjoyed with comfortable pacing and an open mind. The route combines flights, scenic drives, walking tours, elevated landscapes, monasteries, churches, markets, and uneven heritage paths. Guests should dress modestly for religious sites and follow local instructions when entering sacred spaces.

Domestic flights carry a strict allowance of 20 kilograms per person plus hand luggage. Soft-sided or barrel bags are required for light-aircraft holds; hard-sided suitcases may not fit.
Excess luggage may be stored at the Addis Ababa hotel while guests travel on domestic sectors.
The National Museum is closed on Mondays and Merkato is closed on Sundays. The final order of visits may be adjusted around opening days and flight schedules.
September to June are generally favourable for travel. A light sweater is recommended year-round due to elevation.

DAY 01 | ARRIVAL & ADDIS ABABA HERITAGE

Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where a Bush Escapes representative welcomes you, assists with luggage, and transfers you to the hotel.

Depending on arrival time, visit the National Archaeological Museum, home to Lucy and other important archaeological treasures. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Continue to Holy Trinity Cathedral, renowned for its stained glass, sacred atmosphere, and imperial history.

Visit the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, opened in 2024 to commemorate Ethiopia’s victory at Adwa in 1896. Discover the leaders, documents, weapons, maps, and battlefield story behind this defining moment.

Return to the hotel and settle into Addis Ababa.

DAY 02 | ENTOTO HILLS & ADDIS ABABA RIVERSIDE HIKE

Drive to Mt Entoto, rising to approximately 3,200 metres and offering panoramic views of Addis Ababa. Explore its connection to Emperor Menelik II, Entoto Mariam church, the artefact museum, and palace history.

Optionally visit Shiro Meda Market, known for handwoven shawls, fabrics, traditional clothing, jewellery, and souvenirs.

Begin the descent towards the riverside walkways, passing strawberry fields, urban agriculture initiatives, restored natural spaces, public art, and scenic viewpoints.

Hear stories of former pottery workshops, women who carried firewood into the city, Kechene Cemetery, and the communities whose history shaped the river corridor.

Continue through Arada Park and enjoy lunch and a Jebena coffee ceremony at ETT Coffee, with traditional snacks and Ethiopian coffee knowledge.

Visit the National Palace Museum, formerly Jubilee Palace, and make a short stop at Kenbena Plaza before returning to the hotel.

DAY 03 | ADDIS ABABA - BAHIR DAR - BLUE NILE FALLS & LAKE TANA

Transfer to the airport and board domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar, scheduled approximately 07:35 to 08:45, subject to confirmation.

Drive to Blue Nile Falls, locally called Tis Issat or Smoking Water, approximately 30 kilometres from Bahir Dar. Enjoy scenic views, walking trails, rural villages, and the dramatic cascade.

After lunch, cruise Lake Tana by papyrus Tankwa boat towards the Zeghie Peninsula. Visit Ura Kidane Mehret, known for vibrant frescoes, palm groves, coffee farms, and the Zege Satekela Museum.

Explore Bahir Dar market and enjoy the relaxed lakeside character of the city.

DAY 04 | BAHIR DAR - GONDAR, THE CAMelot OF AFRICA

After breakfast, drive approximately 185 kilometres / 3 hours to Gondar through the northern highlands.

Explore the Royal Enclosure, or Fasil Ghebbi, with its castles and palaces of Gondarene emperors, including Fasiladas Palace.

Visit Quskuam Church and Empress Mentewab’s Palace, a place of architectural innovation and female leadership.

Continue to Debre Berhan Selassie church, where walls and ceilings are covered with remarkable murals and rows of serene angel faces.

Relax at the hotel and take in Gondar’s hilltop atmosphere.

DAY 05 | GONDAR - LALIBELA, THE NEW JERUSALEM

Transfer to Gondar airport and board the domestic flight to Lalibela, at approximately 09:55 to 10:25, subject to confirmation.

Discover Lalibela, the New Jerusalem and a UNESCO World Heritage site, with eleven medieval churches carved entirely from single rock.

Explore the north-west cluster, including Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Debre Sina, Bet Golgotha, and the isolated monolith of Bet Giyorgis, the Church of St George.

Take part in a traditional coffee ceremony, then explore Lalibela’s colourful markets and locally produced organic honey.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Overnight at Tukul Village Hotel, a traditional tukul-style lodge with en-suite rooms, private balconies, restaurant, coffee service, lounge, and Wi-Fi.

DAY 06 | LALIBELA’S SOUTH-EASTERN CHURCHES & TEJ EVENING

Continue exploring Lalibela’s south-east cluster, including Bet Gebriel-Rafael, Bet Abba Libanos, Bet Lehem, Bet Emanuel, and Bet Mercurios.

Learn the traditions and legends associated with these churches. Bet Abba Libanos is linked to the story that it was built overnight by King Lalibela’s wife, Meskel Kebre, with the assistance of angels.

Return to Lalibela’s markets for crafts and organic honey products, with time to browse at an unhurried pace.

In the evening, visit Torpido Tej Bets, a traditional honey-wine house decorated with cow skins and Ethiopian fabrics. Enjoy Tej, music, and an atmosphere of genuine Ethiopian hospitality.

DAY 07 | LALIBELA - ADDIS ABABA - ART & CULTURAL FAREWELL

Transfer to Lalibela airport and board return domestic flight to Addis Ababa, scheduled approximately 10:55 to 13:15, subject to confirmation.

After lunch, visit Merkato, one of Addis Ababa’s largest open-air markets. Merkato is closed on Sundays.

Visit Golla Art Gallery, a creative hub for contemporary Ethiopian art and handmade products including textiles, silver jewellery, leather accessories, and natural-fibre baskets.

Enjoy a traditional cultural dinner at YOD Abyssinia with Ethiopian food, music, dance, and Tej honey wine.

Transfer to Bole International Airport for the return international flight to Nairobi.
