Ethiopia’s eastern historic route is a journey through memory, faith, trade, and living culture. From the highland energy of Addis Ababa to the railway-era character of Dire Dawa and the ancient walled city of Harar, this five-day experience reveals a side of Ethiopia that feels intimate, authentic, and richly layered.

Harar known as the City of Saints, is a UNESCO World Heritage city where narrow alleyways, traditional Harari homes, mosques, shrines, markets, and centuries of Islamic scholarship occupy a compact, atmospheric old town. Dire Dawa adds a distinctive multicultural rhythm shaped by Ethiopian, Arabic, Somali, and railway histories.

The route is made memorable through experiences rather than checklists: roasting and brewing coffee in the Ethiopian tradition, sharing a moment in a Harari home, following historic trade routes, exploring sacred architecture, tasting local cuisine, and if selected, witnessing Harar’s famous hyena-feeding tradition.

Accommodation

AYA Addis Hotel provides a convenient and comfortable first-night base close to Bole International Airport, with an on-site restaurant and bar/lounge and a rooftop gym. Room and hotel upgrades may be arranged at additional cost, subject to availability.

Noora Beynouna Village Eco Lodge places guests beside Lake Beseka amid volcanic landscapes, green farmland, and scenic views. In Dire Dawa, New Level Hotel provides a practical urban base with wellness and dining facilities. In Harar, Ras Hotel is selected for its established presence and proximity to Jugol; Ferej Hotel or Rewda Guest House may be used as confirmed alternatives, subject to availability.

Optional Extensions & Travel Notes

For guests who would like to deepen the journey, the eastern route can be extended with carefully selected add-ons. Babile Elephant Sanctuary offers a chance to explore one of Ethiopia’s distinctive conservation landscapes; Harlaa reveals an archaeological trading town linked to the Horn of Africa, Arabia, India, and beyond; and Laga Oda presents ancient rock art in a quiet prehistoric setting. These experiences are available at additional cost and must be confirmed separately.

- Domestic flights carry a strict allowance of 20 kilograms per person plus hand luggage. Soft-sided or barrel bags are required for light-aircraft holds; hard-sided suitcases may not fit.
- Excess luggage may be stored securely at the Addis Ababa hotel while guests travel on the domestic sectors.
- September to June are generally favourable for travel, with the dry season offering comfortable conditions for cultural exploration. A sweater is recommended year-round because of elevation.
- Some sites and markets have weekly closure days: the National Museum is closed on Mondays and Merkato is closed on Sundays. The final sequence may be adjusted accordingly.
- Optional Hyena Man, Porc-Epic Cave, Babile, Harlaa, and Laga Oda experiences are subject to availability, local conditions, and separate confirmation.
- Carry comfortable walking shoes, modest clothing for religious sites, sun protection, a light sweater, a refillable water bottle, and a small day bag for city walks.

DAY 01 | ARRIVAL & ADDIS ABABA CULTURAL INTRODUCTION

Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where a Bush Escapes representative welcomes you, assists with luggage, and transfers you to the hotel.

Depending on arrival time, begin a guided introduction to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s diplomatic capital. Visit the National Archaeological Museum, home to Lucy and other major archaeological treasures. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Continue to Holy Trinity Cathedral, renowned for its stained-glass windows, imperial history, and sacred atmosphere.

Take part in an Ethiopian Coffee Experience: roast and grind beans, learn the Jebena brewing method, taste distinctive regional profiles such as Sidama, Yirgacheffe, and Limu, and enjoy traditional snacks.

Explore Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, for Ethiopian arts, crafts, spices, and everyday life. Merkato is closed on Sundays.

Overnight at AYA Addis Hotel, a 4-star property in the Bole/Atlas area, approximately 3 kilometres from the airport.

DAY 02 | ADDIS ABABA – BEYNOUNA VILLAGE

Depart after breakfast for a scenic journey of approximately 200 kilometres / three to four hours towards Beynouna Village.

Travel through countryside, traditional rural settlements, and open eastern Ethiopian landscapes while observing the changing character of the region.

Arrive near Lake Beseka and discover Beynouna Village, a modern eco-tourism and relaxation destination shaped by local character and contemporary hospitality.

Settle into Noora Beynouna Village Eco Lodge and enjoy the calm of its green farmland, volcanic surroundings, and scenic lake setting.

DAY 03 | BEYNOUNA VILLAGE – DIRE DAWA

After breakfast, continue approximately 180 kilometres / three hours to Dire Dawa, following historic landscapes and routes that once linked Ethiopia with the Arab world.

On arrival, explore Dire Dawa’s markets, mosques, traditional Somali-Arab cuisine, and multicultural railway-era character.

For guests interested in accessible history, Porc-Epic Cave may be visited approximately 3 kilometres from the city centre, overlooking the Dachata River.

Enjoy time to absorb Dire Dawa’s distinctive blend of commerce, culture, and eastern Ethiopian hospitality.

DAY 04 | DIRE DAWA – HARAR, THE CITY OF SAINTS

After breakfast, drive approximately 55 kilometres / one hour from Dire Dawa to Harar through beautiful landscapes, traditional settlements, and historic trade corridors.

Enter Harar Jugol, the ancient walled city renowned for its mosques, shrines, colourful alleyways, markets, and living Islamic and Harari traditions.

Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony with Jebena and authentic snacks in a Harari house a warm, personal encounter with local culture.

If selected, witness the famous Hyena Man feeding show outside the old city walls, a distinctive Harari tradition conducted by local handlers.

Overnight at Ras Hotel, a well-established base for visiting Harar’s old city, mosques, and historic sites. Halal cuisine is generally easy to arrange.

DAY 05 | HARAR JUGOL – DIRE DAWA – ADDIS ABABA

Explore Harar’s stone walls, five gates, historic towers, and the cultural landscape of a city shaped by faith, scholarship, and trade.

Visit the Harari Museum, historic mosques and shrines, Rimbaud House, the 16th-century Grand Mosque, the tomb of Abu Said, and the colourful Shoa Gate Market for crafts, jewellery, baskets, spices, and textiles.

Drive back to Dire Dawa and board the return domestic flight to Addis Ababa, scheduled approximately 15:45–16:55, subject to confirmation.

Enjoy final shopping or a drive through Addis Ababa’s newly developed corridor of pedestrian walkways, cycle lanes, green spaces, and plazas.

Celebrate at YOD Abyssinia with Ethiopian cuisine, music, cultural dances, and Tej honey wine before transferring to the airport for your international departure.
